20+ Years of Craft
The Art of Handloom
Handloom rugs are among the most honest objects in the world of interior textiles. They are made not by machine intelligence or automated repetition, but by the deliberate, skilled hands of artisans who have spent years — often decades — mastering the rhythms of the loom. At Planet Arts, every handloom rug begins with that same human truth: a weaver, a loom, and a choice.
The handloom is a mechanical but non-automatic loom. Unlike power looms that drive the shuttle at industrial speed, the handloom places full control with the weaver. Each pick of the weft is set by hand, each shed change controlled by foot. The result is a textile whose surface bears the unmistakable quality of human judgement — subtle variations in density, slight irregularities in the weave that give handloom rugs their warmth and authenticity.
India's handloom tradition stretches across millennia. Jaipur — where Planet Arts has operated since 2004 — sits at the centre of one of the subcontinent's most celebrated rug-making regions. The craft knowledge that flows through our workshops is passed from generation to generation, refined over centuries into a body of technical mastery that no factory process can replicate. When you source a handloom rug from Planet Arts, you are not simply buying a floor covering; you are commissioning a piece of Indian craft heritage.
We work primarily with two natural fibres: jute and wool. Both are renewable, biodegradable, and suited to the demands of luxury interiors worldwide. Handloom jute rugs bring an earthy, organic quality to living rooms, hospitality lobbies, and coastal retreats. Handloom wool rugs offer softness underfoot and a depth of colour saturation that suits private residences and boutique hotels seeking warmth and permanence in their interiors.
Sustainability is not a marketing position at Planet Arts — it is a structural reality of handloom production itself. The handloom consumes a fraction of the energy of power-loom manufacturing. Natural fibres require no synthetic processing and return cleanly to the earth at the end of their life. Our dyeing processes use responsible methods, and our CEPC certification reflects our commitment to the standards that matter to environmentally conscious buyers globally.
Custom sizing, colourways, and pattern development are available across all collections. Whether you are a hotel FF&E director seeking rooms in a unified palette, an interior designer specifying statement pieces for a private residence, or a retail buyer looking to establish a collection of genuine handmade rugs, Planet Arts offers the manufacturing capability, the design fluency, and the export experience to deliver.
Why Handloom
Each rug is woven by trained artisans in our Jaipur atelier, whose craft knowledge is inherited through generations. No two pieces are exactly identical — each carries the subtle signature of its maker.
We work exclusively with jute and wool — plant and animal fibres that are renewable, biodegradable, and free of the microplastics associated with synthetic alternatives. Natural materials that age beautifully.
Flatweave handloom construction produces a dense, tight surface structure that resists crushing and retains its form across years of use. Our rugs are built for the demands of real interiors — residential and commercial alike.
Handloom manufacturing is low-energy by design. Combined with natural fibres, responsible dyeing, and CEPC-certified export practices, Planet Arts handloom rugs represent a genuinely sustainable choice for conscious interiors.
Every handloom rug can be produced in bespoke dimensions. Whether you need a precise fit for an irregular room, a runner for a narrow corridor, or an oversized statement piece, our production team accommodates custom specifications.
Planet Arts supplies interior professionals, hospitality brands, and retailers across North America, Europe, the Middle East, and beyond. Our rugs are packed, documented, and exported to meet the requirements of every destination market.

From Fibre to Floor
Six considered steps, each executed by specialists. This is how a Planet Arts handloom rug comes to exist.
Step 01
Raw jute and wool fibres are sourced from verified suppliers. Each batch is assessed for grade, consistency, and fibre length before it enters production.
Step 02
Fibres are spun into yarn and dyed to specification. Colour matching is conducted using pantone references or client-supplied swatches to ensure accuracy before weaving begins.
Step 03
Skilled artisans set up the warp on traditional handlooms and weave each row of weft by hand. This is the defining stage — the point at which material becomes a rug with character and texture.
Step 04
Completed rugs are washed, stretched, and dried. Edges are finished to specification — whipped, hemmed, or fringed. Final trimming and surface treatments are applied where required.
Step 05
Every rug passes through a structured quality inspection covering dimensions, weave density, colour accuracy, and surface integrity. Non-conforming pieces are reworked or rejected before shipment.
Step 06
Approved rugs are rolled, wrapped, and packed for international freight. Export documentation — including CE certifications, packing lists, and customs declarations — is prepared in full before despatch.
Natural Fibres
Plant Fibre
Jute is one of the world's most sustainably produced natural fibres — a bast fibre derived from the stalks of the Corchorus plant, grown primarily in the Indian subcontinent. It requires minimal chemical input, grows rapidly, and returns carbon to the soil. Jute's warm golden-brown tone and distinctively firm, textural surface have made it a defining material of the natural interiors movement, beloved by designers who prize authenticity over artifice.
In handloom weaving, jute produces a flat, structured surface that holds its form exceptionally well in high-traffic areas. Handloom jute rugs work beautifully in living rooms, dining areas, hallways, and commercial lobbies — anywhere that calls for a grounded, earthy aesthetic. They pair naturally with rattan, raw linen, pale oak, and unfinished stone.
Protein Fibre
Wool is the luxury fibre of the natural world. A protein fibre derived from the fleece of sheep, wool has been woven into floor coverings for thousands of years — and for good reason. Its natural crimp gives woven wool rugs a resilient, springy surface that recovers from compression. Its cortical structure absorbs dye with exceptional depth, producing colours of richness and saturation that synthetic fibres cannot match. And its thermal and acoustic properties make it the material of choice for rooms that are meant to be lived in fully.
Handloom wool rugs from Planet Arts are produced using quality-graded wool processed through our facility in Jaipur. The handloom construction locks each yarn in place without adhesive backing, producing rugs of remarkable structural integrity. Wool handloom rugs are ideal for master bedrooms, sitting rooms, private hotel suites, and any space where comfort and visual permanence are equally important.

In Depth
India occupies a unique position in the global handloom rug industry. For thousands of years, the subcontinent's artisan communities have produced woven textiles of extraordinary quality — a tradition sustained today through workshops in Jaipur, Varanasi, Agra, and Panipat, where generational knowledge meets contemporary demand. Among the world's luxury handloom rug manufacturers, Planet Arts stands as one of the most established — operating from Jaipur since 2004, exporting to global interior markets, and maintaining the craft standards that distinguish genuine handloom production from mass-market imitation.
The term "handloom" is precise. It refers to a mechanical loom — not a hand-knotting frame, and not an automated power loom — on which a weaver controls the weft insertion and shed change by hand and foot. This distinction matters because it determines the character of the textile. Handloom rugs are flatweaves: their structure is formed entirely by the interlacing of warp and weft yarns, without pile or knotting. The result is a textile of considerable density and durability, with a surface that bears the marks of human attention: slight variations in tension, subtle irregularities in the weave that accumulate into a quality that machines cannot replicate.
The flatweave construction also gives handloom area rugs a versatility that pile rugs lack. They lie flat, travel well, clean easily, and work in both traditional and contemporary settings. For the interior professionals who specify them — and the homeowners who live with them — handmade handloom rugs offer a genuinely different value proposition from the machine-made alternatives that dominate mass-market retail.
Among the materials available to handloom weavers, jute occupies a special place in the contemporary interior market. It is among the most sustainably produced natural fibres on earth — grown without pesticides, requiring minimal water, and returning organic matter to the soil after harvest. In handloom production, jute yields a rug with a firm, textural surface and a warm golden tone that works beautifully in living rooms, dining spaces, hallways, and coastal retreats.
Planet Arts handloom jute rugs are woven in Jaipur using quality-graded jute yarn. Each rug is produced to specification — standard or custom dimensions, natural undyed tones, or coloured using responsible dyeing methods. Our jute rugs are used by interior designers working across the full spectrum of residential styles, from Californian coastal to Scandinavian minimal to Indian vernacular. They are available for global export, packed and documented to the standards required by each destination market.
For buyers interested in sustainable handloom rugs, jute is the obvious starting point. The combination of low production energy, renewable fibre, and biodegradable end-of-life makes jute handloom rugs one of the most environmentally responsible floor covering choices currently available at the luxury end of the market.
Wool is the fibre that luxury interiors reach for when they want permanence. No other natural material combines softness, resilience, thermal performance, and colour depth in quite the same way. In handloom weaving, wool produces a surface that is firmer than a hand-knotted pile rug but considerably softer than jute — sitting in an ideal middle ground for spaces where comfort and durability are equally important.
Planet Arts handloom wool rugs are produced using quality-graded wool processed through our Jaipur facility. We work with designers to develop custom colourways — from the pale, barely-there neutrals favoured in Nordic interiors to the deep, saturated tones that suit Moroccan-influenced or maximalist spaces. Wool's natural dye affinity means that our custom colour work is of a quality that holds up to close inspection and the passage of time.
Luxury wool carpets from Planet Arts are used in private residences, boutique hotels, resort villas, and corporate offices where a floor covering needs to be both visually distinguished and operationally dependable. Our hospitality clients specifically value the combination of commercial durability and aesthetic refinement that handloom wool rugs provide.
One of the most significant capabilities that distinguishes a serious handloom carpet manufacturer from a catalogue supplier is the ability to develop truly bespoke products. At Planet Arts, custom handloom rug development is a core part of our offer — not an exception or a premium service, but a standard capability that we have refined across two decades of working with demanding clients.
Custom development begins with a brief: dimensions, fibre preference (jute, wool, or a blend), colour references, and any pattern or weave structure requirements. Our design team works with clients to translate these requirements into a technical specification, produce sampling swatches for approval, refine colour and weave details, and then move to full production once the client has signed off. This process — transparent, collaborative, and precisely documented — is how we deliver custom handloom rugs that arrive exactly as intended, regardless of whether the client is in London, New York, Dubai, or Sydney.
Planet Arts is a CEPC Certified handloom rug exporter — a designation that reflects both our compliance with Indian export quality standards and our standing within the Carpet Export Promotion Council, the body that represents India's handloom and rug export industry internationally. This certification is not a box-ticking exercise; it is a commitment to the quality disciplines and documentation standards that international buyers require.
Our export experience spans over two decades and covers North America, Western Europe, the Nordic countries, the Middle East, Australia, and Southeast Asia. We understand the import requirements of each major destination market — the testing standards, documentation requirements, and packaging specifications that ensure our rugs clear customs and arrive in condition. For wholesale handloom rug buyers and retail importers, this operational experience is as valuable as the rugs themselves.
The versatility of handloom rugs across interior applications is one of their defining strengths. In residential settings, natural fibre rugs bring an organic grounding to open-plan living areas, while premium wool rugs add warmth and depth to bedrooms and private sitting rooms. In hospitality environments, handloom rugs in large custom formats create immersive floor-scapes in hotel lobbies, restaurant spaces, and spa suites.
For interior designers and architects working on high-specification projects, Planet Arts offers a manufacturing partner that combines craft authenticity with professional project management. We provide sampling services, technical drawings, lead time guarantees, and dedicated communication throughout the project lifecycle. Our rugs have featured in residential projects, boutique hotel openings, and commercial fit-outs across the globe — in each case delivering the combination of aesthetic quality and operational reliability that demanding clients require.
If you are evaluating handloom rug manufacturers for a current or future project, we invite you to explore our collections, request samples, or contact our team directly. Planet Arts has been building relationships with design professionals since 2004 — and the best of those relationships are the ones that continue across many projects and many years.
