Wool Flatweave

Woven for precision.
Built for performance.

Wool flatweave rugs occupy a distinct position in the rug landscape — not because of their material alone, but because of what flatweave construction makes possible. The flat, low-profile surface is the result of a precise interlacing of warp and weft, producing a rug that lies perfectly flat, handles cleanly, and holds pattern with a crispness that pile constructions cannot achieve.

Our wool flatweave collections are developed for designers, architects, and hospitality buyers working at scale. The construction supports large-format production without distortion, travels and ships with exceptional efficiency, and performs in environments where both aesthetics and durability are non-negotiable.

From geometric repeats to tonal textures and architectural colour studies, every rug in this collection is available to develop as a custom piece, a private label collection, or a hospitality programme. Manufacturing is based in Jaipur, Rajasthan — with direct export to North America, Europe, the United Kingdom, Australia, the Middle East, and beyond.

Construction & Material

Flatweave Engineering

Built without pile.
Built to last.

Flatweave construction produces rugs through the direct interlacing of warp and weft yarns — no secondary pile structure, no knots, no backing required. The result is a surface of consistent density, dimensional stability, and pattern precision that is difficult to achieve with any other construction method.

We source premium wool fibres selected for staple length, tensile strength, and colour uptake. Natural wool offers inherent resilience: it recovers from compression, resists soil, regulates ambient moisture, and maintains structural integrity across years of use. In flatweave format, these properties are delivered without the added weight or height of pile constructions — making our wool flatweave rugs among the most practical and durable options available for both residential and commercial specification.

Colour retention is a particular strength. The flatweave structure exposes the full yarn surface, producing vivid, consistent colouration that does not fade, crush, or shift with use. Pattern edges are clean and precise — important for geometric and architectural designs where definition is part of the aesthetic.

Why Flatweave
Wool flatweave rug detail showing low-profile surface and precise pattern edges

The Case for Wool Flatweave

Nine reasons designers
specify flatweave.

Natural Resilience Wool recovers from compression, resists crushing, and maintains surface integrity without intervention.
Long-Term Durability Flatweave construction creates a dense, tight structure that resists wear across years of use — residential and commercial.
Low-Profile Performance Sits flat without underlay requirements. Works under furniture, through doorways, and against other floor finishes without disruption.
Pattern Definition The flatweave structure holds geometric and architectural patterns with a precision that pile rugs cannot match.
Layering Flexibility A flat profile means flatweave rugs layer cleanly over other rugs, tiles, or stone without creating height issues.
Large-Area Coverage Flatweave construction supports very large formats — room-scale pieces without the weight and handling challenges of pile constructions.
Reversible Many wool flatweave constructions are reversible, offering a second visual life and doubling effective wear resistance.
Designer Appeal Contemporary residential and hospitality design has moved toward clarity, precision, and natural material. Wool flatweave delivers all three.
Commercial Practicality Ships flat, installs easily, maintains appearance under housekeeping, and replaces simply. A practical specification for buyers working at volume.

FAQs

Common Questions
from Buyers

Wool flatweave rugs are woven constructions in which wool yarns are interlaced horizontally and vertically — without pile, knots, or a secondary backing structure. The resulting surface is flat, low-profile, precise in pattern, and highly durable. They are distinct from hand-knotted, hand-tufted, and handloom constructions in both their manufacturing process and their performance characteristics.
Yes. The flatweave construction creates a dense, tightly woven structure that resists wear and deformation. Wool's natural resilience — its ability to recover from compression and resist soil — adds further longevity. These are among the most durable rug constructions available and are routinely specified for high-traffic residential and commercial environments.
Flatweave construction does not use pile or knots. The warp and weft are interlaced directly to form the visible surface, producing a flat, reversible rug with a lower profile than hand-knotted or tufted alternatives. This results in precise pattern definition, lighter weight, easier placement, and different maintenance characteristics compared to pile constructions.
Yes — fully. We customise size, shape, colour, and pattern. Custom development is available for single pieces, collections, private label programmes, and hospitality projects. Bring us a reference, a colour palette, a mood board, or a precise technical specification and we will develop accordingly.
Yes. Flatweave construction is particularly well-suited to large-format production. We produce room-scale rugs in a single piece, avoiding the joining and seaming that large pile rugs often require. Very large hospitality and commercial installations are a regular part of our production.
Yes. Private label manufacturing is a core part of our business. We produce under client brand names for retailers, furniture brands, and interior product companies across North America, Europe, the United Kingdom, and Australia. This includes brand labelling, swing tags, packaging, and full export documentation.
Yes. Planet Arts exports to more than 40 countries. Key markets include the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand, the UAE, and across the Middle East. We manage full export documentation, compliance, and logistics coordination in-house.
Yes. We develop custom colourways against Pantone references, RAL codes, material samples, or interior colour specifications. A dyed yarn sample is provided for colour approval before production begins. We also develop original palette directions for private label collections.
Yes. We develop original patterns from design briefs, reference images, or artwork files. Our design team works with clients through the pattern development process — from initial interpretation to repeat confirmation to sample approval — before production is committed.
Minimum order quantities vary by product type and customisation level. Standard repeat colourways have lower minimums than full custom pattern development. Contact us with your specification and volume requirement and we will advise accordingly.
Lead times depend on order volume, customisation requirements, and current production scheduling. Standard production typically runs 6–10 weeks from order confirmation. Custom development adds time for sampling and approval rounds prior to production. We advise lead times specific to each order at the time of enquiry.
Yes. We supply physical samples for collection assessment and material reference. Custom development samples — including colour and pattern trials — are produced ahead of production commitment. Request samples through our contact form.
All rugs are manufactured in Jaipur, Rajasthan, India. Jaipur is India's established centre of rug production, and Planet Arts has operated there since 2004. Production takes place entirely within our own facility — we do not outsource to third-party manufacturers.
Many flatweave constructions are reversible, presenting the same or a complementary pattern on both sides. This is a practical advantage for high-traffic areas — the rug can be turned to distribute wear. Reversibility depends on the specific pattern and construction, and we can advise per piece.
Yes. Runners are produced in any length, with consistent pattern repeat throughout. We regularly produce corridor and stair runners for hospitality projects in lengths that standard retail rugs cannot accommodate.
Yes, and this is a significant part of our business. We work directly with interior designers on custom rug development, from brief to production. Trade pricing and sample support are available for design professionals. Contact us to set up a trade account.
Yes. We supply hotels, resorts, serviced apartments, restaurants, and commercial hospitality environments. Our flatweave wool rugs are a common specification for high-traffic hospitality settings where durability and appearance retention are both required. Volume pricing, programme management, and multi-property supply are all available.
We work with several wool types depending on the construction and application requirements. Options include new wool, recycled wool blends, and blended wool-cotton constructions. We advise on material selection based on the specific application, budget, and required performance characteristics.
Wool flatweave rugs are low-maintenance compared to pile constructions. Regular vacuuming on a low suction setting is sufficient for routine care. Spills should be blotted immediately — not rubbed. Professional cleaning is recommended for deep cleaning. Care guides are provided with all orders.
Standard terms are a deposit on order confirmation and the balance prior to shipment. Terms for established accounts and volume buyers may vary. All payment terms are confirmed at the order stage.
Yes. Round, oval, runner, and irregular shapes are all available. Flatweave construction supports edge finishing on cut shapes without the structural issues that pile constructions can present. Shape requirements should be confirmed at the enquiry stage.
Yes. For custom orders, we produce pre-production samples — including colour trials and pattern repeats — for client approval before full production begins. This is a standard part of our custom development process and helps ensure the finished product matches the agreed specification exactly.
Wool flatweave rugs are generally compatible with underfloor heating systems, as the flat, low-profile construction does not create the insulation barrier that thicker pile rugs can. We recommend confirming compatibility with your specific heating system and following the floor heating manufacturer's guidance for textile floor coverings.
Yes. For private label and retail programmes, we supply rugs with branded packaging, swing tags, care labels, and barcoding to your retail specification. Packaging design and specification are confirmed during the programme development stage.
