Craft & Technique
Planet Arts commands expertise across the full spectrum of traditional handmade rug techniques. Each method produces a distinctly different character — in texture, weight, surface quality, and construction longevity. Our manufacturing team guides every client toward the technique best suited to their application.
In hand-knotting, individual artisans tie each pile knot to the warp threads of the loom — a technique unchanged for centuries. Knot density (measured in KPSI) determines the resolution of pattern and depth of texture. Hand-knotted rugs are considered heirloom objects, with lifespans measured in generations.
Hand-tufting uses a tufting gun guided by hand to punch yarn through a backing cloth. The technique allows for intricate sculptural relief, three-dimensional pile effects, and faster production timelines than hand-knotting — without sacrificing design complexity or material quality.
Flatweave construction creates rugs with no pile — warp and weft threads interlace to form a dense, flat surface with geometric precision. The technique produces lightweight, reversible rugs with clean graphic patterns, suited to contemporary and transitional interiors.
Kilims and dhurries represent two of India's most distinguished flatweave traditions. Kilims are typically woven in wool with geometric or tribal-inspired patterns; dhurries are often cotton-woven with a softer hand. Both techniques carry centuries of South Asian craft heritage — refined and modernised within our Jaipur workshops.
Planet Arts manufactures rugs in any shape: circular, oval, runner, stair carpet, irregular geometric, and fully bespoke forms developed from architectural drawings. Custom shaped rugs are among our most requested capabilities for high-end residential and hospitality installations.
Our loom infrastructure and artisan network are equipped for oversized statement rugs, room-filling installations, and multi-unit commercial supply. Large-scale projects are managed with dedicated production supervisors and staged quality control checkpoints throughout the weaving process.
