Every Planet Arts rug is built by hand, method by method. Understanding construction is the first step to choosing the piece that is right for your project — whether a grand hotel lobby or an intimate residence.
The apex of the rug-maker's art. Each knot — tied individually around warp threads by a master weaver — contributes to a structure of extraordinary density, durability, and design resolution. A large hand knotted rug may contain millions of individual knots, each placed with intention. At Planet Arts, knot densities range from 60 to 400+ KPSI in our finest silk commissions.
Ideal for: Luxury residences, flagship hotel lobbies, collector commissions, heritage interiors.
Explore Hand KnottedProduced using a hand-operated tufting gun guided by skilled artisans across a stretched canvas backing, hand tufted rugs offer exceptional design versatility and faster production timelines without compromising on material quality. The pile is secured with natural latex and a quality backing, delivering 20–50 years of beautiful service under normal use.
Ideal for: Contemporary residences, boutique hotels, hospitality room installations, design studios.
Explore Hand TuftedWoven on traditional looms without a pile, flatweave rugs produce graphic patterns of extraordinary visual clarity. Lightweight, reversible, and supremely practical, they are as at home in a contemporary museum store as a Rajasthani palace courtyard. Planet Arts flatweaves are crafted in wool, cotton, linen, and natural fibre blends on handloom looms by our specialist flatweave artisans.
Ideal for: Dining areas, corridors, layering applications, contemporary interiors, outdoor-adjacent spaces.
Explore FlatweavesRooted in centuries of Indian artisanal tradition, Dhurries are handwoven flat textiles of remarkable character and utility. Originally crafted for the floors of Rajasthani fortresses, today's Planet Arts Dhurries bring this heritage into a design-forward context — with custom colour palettes, contemporary geometric patterns, and the same quality of material and execution as all our premium work.
Ideal for: Residential interiors, resort villas, outdoor terraces, heritage hotel properties.
Explore DhurriesKilims are distinguished by their slit-weave technique — colour areas built by separate weft threads worked back to each their own area, creating the characteristic sharp-edged geometric boldness of the form. Planet Arts Kilims honour the abstract geometric traditions of Central Asia and Anatolia while offering full customisation of palette, scale, and design for contemporary interior applications.
Ideal for: Eclectic residences, boutique hotels, collector spaces, art-informed interiors.

The material of a piece determines its character, longevity, sheen, and tactile quality. Planet Arts sources only the finest natural fibres, processed and dyed in our own Jaipur facility — used consistently across rugs, textiles, wall hangings, cushions, and poufs.
New Zealand and Himalayan wool — prized for long staple length, natural resilience, and extraordinary colour depth. Wool is inherently flame-retardant, soil-resistant, and humidity-regulating. The most practical and versatile luxury choice for residential and hospitality applications.
Pure mulberry silk — the finest, most luminous fibre available to the rug maker. Silk's natural protein sheen creates a quality of light that shifts with viewing angle, appearing to change colour as you move. Enables knot densities of 400+ KPSI and painterly design resolution impossible in other materials.
Derived from bamboo cellulose, bamboo silk (viscose) offers silk-like luminosity at a more accessible price point. Revered for its soft sheen and the way it captures light across the pile surface. Best suited to low-traffic decorative applications — bedroom feature pieces, formal living rooms, and wall-hung textile art.
A versatile, breathable natural fibre used extensively across our flatweave, Dhurrie, and textile ranges. Cotton takes dye beautifully, producing crisp, saturated colourways, and offers excellent durability at an accessible price point for both residential and hospitality use.
Jute, hemp, and other bast and plant fibres bring raw organic texture and elemental honesty to a piece. Planet Arts natural fibre products are handwoven on traditional looms, producing pieces of singular textural character suited to organic, biophilic, and sustainable interior design briefs.
Also available: viscose, leather, and hemp-blend constructions. See our full material guide for technical specifications on every fibre we work with.
Three Collections, Six Categories
Three distinct design languages, expressed across rugs, textiles, wall hangings, cushions, and poufs. All made by hand in Jaipur. All available in custom sizes, colours, and materials.
Aura speaks in gradients, in the subtlest shifts of tone, in the kind of beauty that deepens upon sustained attention. It is the collection for those who understand that the quietest statement is often the most powerful. Aura pieces are characterised by nuanced, complex colorways drawing on stone, mineral, sky, and the untouched earth — surfaces that change with the light and reward the eye that pauses.
Magna commands. Its design language is one of architectural confidence — bold geometric structures, large-scale pattern compositions, deliberate colour contrasts that anchor a room with authority. Magna pieces are conceived for grand spaces: hotel lobbies of significant scale, formal reception rooms, the entrance halls of distinguished residences where the floor and its surrounding textiles must speak as clearly as the architecture above them.
Impact pushes the boundaries of what a handmade object can be. It is a collection born from the conviction that a rug, a wall hanging, or a cushion can be a canvas — and that the craft traditions of Jaipur, applied with the ambition of contemporary art, can produce objects of genuine artistic singularity. Unexpected material combinations, dramatic sculptural pile treatments, and design statements that begin conversations.

Our Atelier
Since 2004, Planet Arts has operated our own manufacturing atelier in Jaipur, Rajasthan — the world's pre-eminent centre of luxury handmade rug and textile production. We do not outsource. We do not subcontract. Every piece across every category — rugs, textiles, wall hangings, cushions, poufs, and bags — is made in our own facility, under our own supervision, by artisans we know, train, and are proud to call our team. Read more about our production process or our story.
This is the foundation of our quality guarantee — not an inspection at the end of a supply chain, but ownership of every step from raw fibre to finished piece.
The Knowledge Archive
Expert knowledge, plainly explained. Everything designers, buyers, and collectors need to make informed decisions about handmade rugs and textiles. Read more on our Journal.
A hand knotted rug is constructed by tying individual yarn knots around warp threads, one by one, across the full width of the rug. A skilled Jaipur weaver ties 8,000–12,000 knots per day; a large fine rug may contain millions. Knot density — measured in KPSI — determines design resolution and is the primary quality indicator. Planet Arts hand knotted rugs range from 60 KPSI in bold wool constructions to 400+ KPSI in our finest pure silk pieces. The resulting structure is among the most durable objects in the decorative arts, capable of lasting over a century under normal residential use.
Learn moreA hand tufted rug is made using a hand-operated tufting gun that pushes yarn loops through a stretched canvas backing material. The artisan guides the gun across the canvas following the design, building up the pile pattern. Latex is applied to the reverse to secure the pile, and a secondary backing fabric is adhered. Hand tufted rugs are significantly faster to produce than hand knotted pieces, making them more accessible in price while maintaining excellent design capability and material quality. At Planet Arts, hand tufted rugs are available in wool, bamboo silk, and mixed-fibre constructions.
Learn moreBamboo silk — also known as bamboo viscose or art silk — is a semi-synthetic fibre derived from the cellulose of bamboo through a chemical regeneration process. Despite its name, it is not a protein fibre like true mulberry silk, but shares several visual characteristics: high lustre, soft drape, and excellent light-reflective quality that gives rugs a shimmering surface as the pile direction changes. Planet Arts uses bamboo silk in hand tufted and hand knotted constructions, particularly in our Impact collection. It performs beautifully in low-traffic decorative applications and as a luminous accent fibre within wool-based designs.
Learn moreA well-made hand knotted rug is among the most durable objects in the decorative arts — antique Persian and Jaipur rugs from the 19th century are still in active use and auction today. Under typical residential use with appropriate care, a quality hand knotted rug should comfortably last over a century. Hand tufted rugs have a shorter functional lifespan of 20–50 years, primarily due to the latex backing which can degrade over time. Flatweave rugs, lacking pile, are extremely durable in high-traffic conditions for many decades. All Planet Arts constructions are executed at the highest quality possible within each method.
Learn moreThe most reliable approach is to work from your furniture layout, not the room dimensions alone. In living rooms, the rug should allow at least all front legs of primary seating to rest on it — typically 240×300cm to 300×400cm for most configurations. In dining rooms, extend a minimum of 60cm beyond the table edge on all sides. In bedrooms, extend 60–90cm on both sides and the foot of the bed. The most common mistake is undersizing — a rug that fills the room confidently (leaving only 30–40cm of hard floor at the perimeter) creates far greater visual luxury. Planet Arts manufactures any size to your exact measurements.
Learn moreThe finest luxury interiors favour hand knotted rugs in high-quality wool, silk, or wool-silk combinations — materials that possess a visual and tactile depth no machine-made or tufted alternative can replicate. For formal living and dining spaces, silk or wool-silk rugs in medium-to-fine knot densities deliver an exceptional level of design refinement and that characteristic play of light across the pile. Planet Arts' Aura collection is particularly sought for high-end residential projects. For grand architectural spaces, Magna's bold geometric authority creates the commanding floor statement that a large room requires. Material, scale, and design should be matched to the specific character and mood of each space.
