Jute rugs aren't a single construction — how the fiber is worked changes the texture, the look, and the room it suits best. Here's how to find the right one.

Braided jute rug in natural golden brown with concentric coiled pattern Braided

Braided Jute Rugs

Thick strands of jute are twisted into cord, then coiled and hand-stitched into shape — producing a rug with genuine physical depth rather than a flat surface. The most textured, dimensional jute construction available, with a distinctly artisanal character. Round and oval forms are a signature of this construction.

Handloom Jute Rugs

Woven flat on a traditional loom, handloom jute rugs are reversible, low-profile, and the most versatile jute construction available — accommodating everything from plain weave to herringbone and geometric patterns. If you're picturing a classic jute rug, this is most likely it.

Printed

Printed Jute Rugs

Here, the design sits on the surface rather than in the weave itself — pattern is digitally printed onto a natural jute base. That means far greater flexibility in color, gradient, and detail than weaving or braiding alone can achieve, without giving up jute's underlying natural texture.

Foundation

What Are Jute Rugs?

A jute rug is a floor covering handwoven from natural jute fiber — a plant-based material known for its warm golden-brown tone and matte, textured surface. Jute is naturally biodegradable and among the softest plant fibers used in rug-making, which is why it works comfortably in bedrooms and living rooms as well as more design-forward spaces.

Every Planet Arts jute rug is handmade, not machine-produced — a distinction that shows in the slight, natural variation across the surface of each piece.

The Material Case

Why Jute Rugs

Jute brings a combination few other floor coverings offer: a warm, textured, matte surface; genuine biodegradability; and enough price accessibility to use it at generous scale in a room. It's a naturally occurring plant fiber, and its slight tonal variation from piece to piece is a mark of handcraft rather than a flaw.

Jute performs well under light-to-medium residential foot traffic — bedrooms, living rooms, low-traffic dining. It isn't the right choice for main hallways or heavy commercial thoroughfares, and it should stay in dry, climate-controlled spaces rather than humid or outdoor ones.

1–2yr
Fully biodegradable. A natural-backed jute rug breaks down completely in soil, leaving no microplastic residue behind.
~15t
CO₂ absorbed per hectare during a single jute growing season — genuinely carbon-positive agriculture.
Zero
Microplastics shed. Unlike synthetic rugs, jute produces none during use or wear.

Application & Sizing

Jute Rugs by Room & Size

Living Room

A large-format flatweave anchors an open-plan or seating-focused room without overwhelming it. Braided rugs suit a more casual reading corner.

Bedroom

Jute's relative softness among plant fibers makes it one of the more comfortable natural-fiber options for bedrooms — pair it with a good rug pad for extra cushioning underfoot.

Dining Room

A tightly woven flatweave is the right call here — braided and chunky textures show spills and debris more than a flat surface does.

Room Recommended Size
Small Living Room 1.6 × 2.3m or 2.0 × 3.0m
Medium Living Room 2.4 × 3.0m or 2.4 × 3.4m (most popular)
Large / Open-Plan 3.0 × 4.0m or larger
Queen Bedroom 2.4 × 3.0m (most common)
Dining (6-seat table) 2.4 × 3.0m minimum

Frequently Asked Questions

A jute rug is woven from the bast fibers of the jute plant. Compared with sisal, seagrass, or coir, jute is notably softer — which is why it's the natural fiber most often chosen for bedrooms and living rooms rather than higher-traffic or outdoor spaces.
Jute is the softest of the major plant fibers, but it isn't plush like wool. Expect a firm, textured surface — comfortable for bare feet in brief contact, and noticeably improved with a quality rug pad underneath.
No. Jute is sensitive to moisture, and exposure to rain or ground humidity causes swelling, mold, and structural damage over time. Keep jute rugs in dry, interior spaces only.
For most living rooms, 2.4 × 3.0m is the most common specification — sized so the main seating group's legs rest on the rug. See the size guide above, or contact us for a custom recommendation.
Yes, gradually. UV exposure lightens jute's natural golden tone over time, producing a soft, even patina — particularly with regular rotation. Uneven exposure can cause noticeable patchy fading.
Jute is combustible, unlike wool. Fire-retardant treatment is available on request for hospitality, commercial, or multi-occupancy specifications where fire-rating standards apply.
Dimensions, construction (braided, handloom, or printed), and finishing details can all be customized to your project. Contact our trade team with your specification to get started.
