What They Are

Constructed Flat.
Designed to Last.

Flatweave rugs are woven without a pile. The warp and weft threads are interlocked directly to create a smooth, low-profile surface — delivering structure, pattern and durability without the bulk of knotted or tufted construction.

The result is a rug that is inherently reversible, easy to maintain and visually precise. Pattern fidelity is high, edges are clean, and the construction responds equally well to geometric, abstract and traditional motifs. For designers working across residential, hospitality and commercial projects, flatweave rugs offer a reliable and versatile specification option.

Planet Arts manufactures flatweave rugs in wool, jute, cotton and wool-jute blends, across kilim, dhurrie, tapestry and custom weave constructions. All production is handwoven in our Jaipur facility.

Why Flatweave

Eight reasons designers
keep specifying flatweave.

Reversible Construction

Both sides are finished and usable. Rotating the rug doubles its working life and provides styling flexibility — particularly useful for designer residential projects.

Low Profile

Under 6mm in most constructions. Opens under furniture easily. No pile to crush at door sweeps. Compatible with underfloor heating installations.

Easy Maintenance

Without a pile, there is nowhere for dust and debris to embed. Regular brushing or shaking is sufficient for routine maintenance in most residential environments.

Ideal for Layering

The flat surface lays cleanly over carpet, sisal or wood without bunching or shifting. A standard layering technique in contemporary interior styling.

Contemporary Aesthetics

Clean surface profile renders geometric, abstract and minimalist patterns with precision. Consistent with modern, Japandi, transitional and Scandinavian interior directions.

Durable Construction

No pile to shed, matt or wear unevenly. Wool flatweave rugs in particular hold their structure under foot traffic that would degrade a comparable knotted construction over the same period.

Versatile Applications

Equally at home in residential living rooms, hotel guestrooms, retail spaces and commercial lobbies. One construction category that covers a full range of project types.

Designer Preference

Flat surface equals pattern precision. What is drawn is what is woven. This predictability makes flatweave the preferred category for designers specifying custom colour and pattern programmes.

Handwoven Construction

Every flatweave rug produced by Planet Arts is handwoven. Kilim and dhurrie constructions are woven on traditional frame looms by artisans trained in Rajasthani weaving techniques. Tapestry and soumak variations require additional skill — each is woven by trained specialists within our facility.

Material Selection

We source wool from certified Indian suppliers, jute from established Bengal producers and cotton from domestic spinning mills. Material grades are matched to the application — hospitality and export specifications receive more rigorous testing than standard residential orders.

Colour Development

Our in-house dye team works with vegetable dyes, synthetic dyes and chrome-free processes across all fibre types. Colour consistency across dye lots is a core quality metric — critical for multi-room hospitality programmes and repeat retail orders.

Quality Control

Every rug is inspected at loom, post-washing, post-finishing and pre-packing. Dimensions, colour, construction integrity and selvedge finish are checked against approved samples before any piece is cleared for export.

Export Packaging

Flatweave rugs are packed to international standard — tube-rolled, polywrapped, banded and export-cartonned. Documentation, country of origin certificates and compliance paperwork are prepared for each order.

Global Supply Experience

We have exported flatweave rugs to buyers in the USA, UK, UAE, Australia, Germany, France, Scandinavia and across the Gulf. Our team is experienced in import compliance requirements across all major markets.

Buyer FAQs

Frequently Asked
Questions

Are flatweave rugs durable? +
Yes. Flatweave rugs are constructed without a pile, which means there is no fibre to crush or wear unevenly over time. Wool flatweave rugs in particular hold their structure under daily use and are suitable for high-traffic residential and light commercial applications.
Are flatweave rugs reversible? +
Most flatweave constructions — kilim and dhurrie in particular — are fully reversible. Both sides are finished identically. Rotating and flipping the rug extends its lifespan and provides styling flexibility that pile rugs cannot offer.
Which material is best for flatweave rugs? +
It depends on the application. Wool offers the best durability and luxury positioning. Cotton is soft, lightweight and colour-precise. Jute brings natural organic texture. Wool-jute blends balance aesthetics with improved durability over pure jute. Our team will recommend based on your project brief.
Can flatweave rugs be custom made? +
Yes. Planet Arts manufactures flatweave rugs in fully custom sizes, colours, patterns, shapes and weave constructions. Custom development includes colour matching, sampling and bulk production. There is no catalogue-only restriction on what we will produce.
Do you manufacture flatweave rugs for hotels? +
Yes. We supply flatweave rugs to hospitality projects globally. We accommodate FF&E specification sheets, room-type grading, consistent dye lot production and volume pricing. Private label and custom packaging are available for hospitality programmes.
Can you match custom colours? +
Yes. Our in-house dye and colour development team matches Pantone references, client colour swatches and custom samples across all materials. Colour confirmation samples are dispatched for approval before production begins.
Do you export internationally? +
Yes. Planet Arts exports to the USA, UK, UAE, Europe, Australia and other markets. We are CEPC and EPCH certified and our team is experienced in international freight, import compliance documentation and destination market requirements.
What weave structures do you offer? +
We offer kilim, dhurrie, tapestry weave, soumak, plain weave and custom weave structures. Each construction has a distinct visual character and different properties in terms of texture, durability and pattern resolution. We will advise on the appropriate structure for your application.
What sizes are available? +
Standard export sizes are available from 2×3 ft to 12×15 ft. We manufacture custom sizes, including runners and room-size formats, to exact dimensions for any project type. No standard size restriction applies to custom orders.
How long does production take? +
Standard production lead times range from 4 to 12 weeks depending on order volume, construction complexity and whether custom colour development is required. Lead times are confirmed at the enquiry stage once all project parameters are agreed.
Can I request samples before placing a bulk order? +
Yes. Physical samples are available for design approval before production. This includes strike-off samples for custom colour and pattern development, and memo samples from existing stock. Sample costs and dispatch timelines are discussed at enquiry stage.
What is the minimum order quantity? +
Minimum order quantities vary by construction and whether custom development is involved. Contact our team directly to discuss your specific project requirements — we work with designers on single custom pieces as well as large import programmes.
Do you offer private label manufacturing? +
Yes. Planet Arts manufactures flatweave rugs under private label for retailers, importers and brands worldwide. Custom packaging, hang tags, care labels and export documentation in your brand identity are all available.
Are flatweave rugs suitable for underfloor heating? +
The low profile and breathable construction of natural fibre flatweave rugs — particularly wool and cotton — makes them generally compatible with underfloor heating systems. Always confirm compatibility with your flooring specialist for specific installation requirements.
How should flatweave rugs be cleaned? +
Most flatweave rugs can be spot cleaned with mild soap and cold water. Regular brushing or shaking removes surface dust. Professional cleaning is recommended for heavy soiling. Specific care instructions are provided with every order and vary by material.
Are your rugs ethically produced? +
Yes. Planet Arts is CEPC and EPCH certified. Our manufacturing practices prioritise fair wages, artisan welfare and responsible material sourcing. We are a family-run manufacturer with direct oversight of all production, not a trading company sourcing from multiple undisclosed vendors.
Can flatweave rugs be used in covered outdoor areas? +
Certain flatweave constructions in treated or inherently durable natural fibres are suitable for covered outdoor areas such as verandas and covered terraces. We will advise on appropriate constructions and materials based on the intended outdoor environment.
Do you offer designer collaboration services? +
Yes. We work directly with interior designers and architects on custom flatweave collection development. This includes concept discussion, material selection, colour development, sampling and full production. Designers receive direct access to our manufacturing team throughout the process.
Are flatweave rugs suitable for layering? +
Yes — and this is one of the primary reasons designers specify flatweave. The low profile and stable flat surface lays cleanly over carpet, sisal or hardwood without bunching, shifting or creating a tripping hazard at the edge. It is a standard layering technique in contemporary residential and hospitality styling.
What certifications does Planet Arts hold? +
Planet Arts is certified by CEPC (Carpet Export Promotion Council) and EPCH (Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts) — the two primary Indian industry bodies governing rug and handicraft exports. These certifications support import compliance across major international markets including the USA, UK and EU.
