Every Planet Arts rug is built by hand, method by method. Understanding construction is the first step to choosing the piece that is right for your project — whether a grand hotel lobby or an intimate residence.

Hand Knotted Rug Process
01

Hand Knotted Rugs

The apex of the rug-maker's art. Each knot — tied individually around warp threads by a master weaver — contributes to a structure of extraordinary density, durability, and design resolution. A large hand knotted rug may contain millions of individual knots, each placed with intention. At Planet Arts, knot densities range from 60 to 400+ KPSI in our finest silk commissions.

100–400+ KPSI Wool · Silk · Blend Generations of life

Ideal for: Luxury residences, flagship hotel lobbies, collector commissions, heritage interiors.

Hand Tufted Rug Process
02

Hand Tufted Rugs

Produced using a hand-operated tufting gun guided by skilled artisans across a stretched canvas backing, hand tufted rugs offer exceptional design versatility and faster production timelines without compromising on material quality. The pile is secured with natural latex and a quality backing, delivering 20–50 years of beautiful service under normal use.

Flatweave Rugs

Woven on traditional looms without a pile, flatweave rugs produce graphic patterns of extraordinary visual clarity. Lightweight, reversible, and supremely practical, they are as at home in a contemporary museum store as a Rajasthani palace courtyard. Planet Arts flatweaves are crafted in wool, cotton, linen, and natural fibre blends on handloom looms by our specialist flatweave artisans.

Ideal for: Dining areas, corridors, layering applications, contemporary interiors, outdoor-adjacent spaces.

Dhurrie Rug India
04

Dhurrie Rugs

Rooted in centuries of Indian artisanal tradition, Dhurries are handwoven flat textiles of remarkable character and utility. Originally crafted for the floors of Rajasthani fortresses, today's Planet Arts Dhurries bring this heritage into a design-forward context — with custom colour palettes, contemporary geometric patterns, and the same quality of material and execution as all our premium work.

Kilim Rug Weaving
05

Kilim Rugs

Kilims are distinguished by their slit-weave technique — colour areas built by separate weft threads worked back to each their own area, creating the characteristic sharp-edged geometric boldness of the form. Planet Arts Kilims honour the abstract geometric traditions of Central Asia and Anatolia while offering full customisation of palette, scale, and design for contemporary interior applications.

Fibre Selection

Browse by Material

The material of a rug determines its character, longevity, sheen, and tactile quality. Planet Arts sources only the finest natural fibres, processed and dyed in our own Jaipur facility.

New Zealand Wool Rug

Wool Rugs

New Zealand and Himalayan wool — prized for long staple length, natural resilience, and extraordinary colour depth. Wool is inherently flame-retardant, soil-resistant, and humidity-regulating. The most practical and versatile luxury choice for residential and hospitality applications.

Resilient · Durable · Natural flame retardant · All environments
Pure Mulberry Silk Rug

Silk Rugs

Pure mulberry silk — the finest, most luminous fibre available to the rug maker. Silk's natural protein sheen creates a quality of light that shifts with viewing angle, appearing to change colour as you move. Enables knot densities of 400+ KPSI and painterly design resolution impossible in other materials.

Luminous · 400+ KPSI · Collector grade · Low traffic
Bamboo Silk Viscose Rug

Bamboo Silk Rugs

Derived from bamboo cellulose, bamboo silk (viscose) offers silk-like luminosity at a more accessible price point. Revered for its soft sheen and the way it captures light across the pile surface. Best suited to low-traffic decorative applications — bedroom feature pieces, formal living rooms, and wall-hung textile art.

Lustrous · Decorative · Soft hand · Bedroom & lounge
Wool Silk Blend Rug

Wool Silk Rugs

The most artistically sophisticated of our material offerings — wool and silk combined in a single construction. Silk highlights selected motifs or grounds while wool forms the structural body, creating breathtaking contrast between matte and luminous surfaces. A singular aesthetic achievement in handmade rug production.

Dual-surface luminosity · Design drama · Collector quality
Natural Fibre Jute Linen Rug

Natural Fibre Rugs

Jute, nettle, linen, and seagrass — bast and plant fibres that bring raw organic texture and elemental honesty to a floor. Planet Arts natural fibre rugs are handwoven on traditional looms, producing pieces of singular textural character suited to organic, biophilic, and sustainable interior design briefs.

Aura rugs are characterised by nuanced, complex colorways drawing on stone, mineral, sky, and the untouched earth — surfaces that change with the light and reward the eye that pauses.

The Knowledge Archive

Understanding Luxury Rugs

Expert knowledge, plainly explained. Everything designers, buyers, and collectors need to make informed decisions about handmade rugs.

What is a Hand Knotted Rug?

A hand knotted rug is constructed by tying individual yarn knots around warp threads, one by one, across the full width of the rug. A skilled Jaipur weaver ties 8,000–12,000 knots per day; a large fine rug may contain millions. Knot density — measured in KPSI — determines design resolution and is the primary quality indicator. Planet Arts hand knotted rugs range from 60 KPSI in bold wool constructions to 400+ KPSI in our finest pure silk pieces. The resulting structure is among the most durable objects in the decorative arts, capable of lasting over a century under normal residential use.

What is a Hand Tufted Rug?

A hand tufted rug is made using a hand-operated tufting gun that pushes yarn loops through a stretched canvas backing material. The artisan guides the gun across the canvas following the design, building up the pile pattern. Latex is applied to the reverse to secure the pile, and a secondary backing fabric is adhered. Hand tufted rugs are significantly faster to produce than hand knotted pieces, making them more accessible in price while maintaining excellent design capability and material quality. At Planet Arts, hand tufted rugs are available in wool, bamboo silk, and mixed-fibre constructions.

Learn more

What is Bamboo Silk?

Bamboo silk — also known as bamboo viscose or art silk — is a semi-synthetic fibre derived from the cellulose of bamboo through a chemical regeneration process. Despite its name, it is not a protein fibre like true mulberry silk, but shares several visual characteristics: high lustre, soft drape, and excellent light-reflective quality that gives rugs a shimmering surface as the pile direction changes. Planet Arts uses bamboo silk in hand tufted and hand knotted constructions, particularly in our Impact collection. It performs beautifully in low-traffic decorative applications and as a luminous accent fibre within wool-based designs.

How Long Does a Handmade Rug Last?

A well-made hand knotted rug is among the most durable objects in the decorative arts — antique Persian and Jaipur rugs from the 19th century are still in active use and auction today. Under typical residential use with appropriate care, a quality hand knotted rug should comfortably last over a century. Hand tufted rugs have a shorter functional lifespan of 20–50 years, primarily due to the latex backing which can degrade over time. Flatweave rugs, lacking pile, are extremely durable in high-traffic conditions for many decades. All Planet Arts constructions are executed at the highest quality possible within each method.

Learn more

How to Choose the Right Rug Size?

The most reliable approach is to work from your furniture layout, not the room dimensions alone. In living rooms, the rug should allow at least all front legs of primary seating to rest on it — typically 240×300cm to 300×400cm for most configurations. In dining rooms, extend a minimum of 60cm beyond the table edge on all sides. In bedrooms, extend 60–90cm on both sides and the foot of the bed. The most common mistake is undersizing — a rug that fills the room confidently (leaving only 30–40cm of hard floor at the perimeter) creates far greater visual luxury. Planet Arts manufactures any size to your exact measurements.

Best Rugs for Luxury Interiors?

The finest luxury interiors favour hand knotted rugs in high-quality wool, silk, or wool-silk combinations — materials that possess a visual and tactile depth no machine-made or tufted alternative can replicate. For formal living and dining spaces, silk or wool-silk rugs in medium-to-fine knot densities deliver an exceptional level of design refinement and that characteristic play of light across the pile. Planet Arts' Aura collection is particularly sought for high-end residential projects. For grand architectural spaces, Magna's bold geometric authority creates the commanding floor statement that a large room requires. Material, scale, and design should be matched to the specific character and mood of each space.

Expert Answers

Your Questions, Answered

Everything designers, architects, hospitality buyers and homeowners ask about luxury handmade rugs — answered with the precision of twenty years of craft.

Full FAQ Archive
Luxury handmade rugs are floor coverings produced entirely by skilled artisans using traditional techniques — hand knotting, hand tufting, or hand weaving — with premium natural fibres such as wool, silk, and bamboo silk. Unlike machine-made alternatives, they carry inherent craft variation, extraordinary durability, and a depth of material and design quality that no automated process can replicate. Planet Arts has been manufacturing luxury handmade rugs in Jaipur, India since 2004, supplying designers, architects, and hospitality projects worldwide.
Hand knotted rugs are made by tying individual yarn knots around warp threads one at a time — an extremely labour-intensive process producing rugs of extraordinary durability (100+ years) and design resolution. Hand tufted rugs are made using a hand-operated tufting gun that pushes loops of yarn through a canvas backing, secured with latex. Tufted rugs are faster to produce and more accessible in price, with a lifespan of 20–50 years. Hand knotted is the superior craft; hand tufted offers excellent value for contemporary applications.
Unequivocally, yes. A quality hand knotted rug from Planet Arts is a multi-generational object — structurally capable of lasting over a century, appreciating in value like fine art, and enriching a space in ways that no machine-made alternative can approach. Beyond longevity, the daily experience of a genuinely fine handmade rug — its weight underfoot, the way its pile changes colour in natural light, the knowledge that it represents thousands of hours of skilled human labour — is qualitatively different from any substitute.
Planet Arts works with New Zealand wool (long staple, exceptionally resilient), Himalayan highland wool (dense, textural), pure mulberry silk (luminous, ultra-fine, collector-grade), bamboo silk (semi-natural, silk-like lustre), and natural bast fibres including jute, linen, and nettle. Mixed-material constructions — particularly wool-silk combinations where silk highlights specific design motifs — are among our most artistically sophisticated pieces. All materials are sourced responsibly and processed in our own Jaipur dye facility.
Hand knotted rugs last over a century under normal residential use — antique pieces from the 19th century are still treasured today. Hand tufted rugs typically last 20–50 years depending on use and care. Flatweave and Dhurrie rugs are extremely durable and can serve well for many decades. At Planet Arts, construction quality is never compromised regardless of method — every piece is executed to the highest standard its category allows.
All Planet Arts rugs are manufactured in our own atelier in Jaipur, Rajasthan, India — the global capital of luxury handmade rug production. We do not outsource to third-party workshops. Our facility encompasses knotting and weaving floors, an in-house dye laboratory, washing facilities, finishing and carving stations, and quality control inspection. Established in 2004, we maintain full ownership of every production step.
Yes — custom manufacturing is one of Planet Arts' core capabilities and the majority of our work involves bespoke commissions. Every parameter can be specified: dimensions (any size or shape), construction method, fibre selection, pile height, colour palette (Pantone, RAL, NCS, or sample matching), and design (client-provided artwork, original studio design, or adaptation of an existing piece). Single-piece commissions are available. Contact our team to begin the design process.
Yes — the finest hotels, resorts, and branded residences worldwide invest in handmade rugs as a defining element of their interior quality. Planet Arts has supplied five-star hotels, boutique resorts, luxury restaurants, private members' clubs, and branded residences across four continents. Our hospitality range is engineered specifically for contract environments — durable construction, fire performance compliance, precise dimensional consistency, and complete project management from specification through coordinated delivery.
Lead times reflect the genuine craft invested in each piece. As a general guide: Flatweaves and Dhurries — 6–10 weeks. Hand Tufted Rugs — 8–16 weeks. Hand Knotted Rugs — 16–52+ weeks depending on size, knot density, and complexity. These timelines cover design finalisation, dyeing, production, washing, finishing, quality control, and logistics. We recommend engaging with our team early in your project schedule.
Yes. Planet Arts exports luxury handmade rugs to over 40 countries worldwide, with established freight forwarding relationships, export documentation expertise, and end-to-end logistics management. We ship via air freight for urgent or single-piece commissions and sea freight for larger project shipments. All shipments are fully insured and tracked. International trade clients can also nominate their own freight forwarder for collection from our Jaipur facility.
Yes. Planet Arts operates a dedicated Trade Programme for interior designers, architects, interior stylists, and procurement firms. Trade members receive preferred pricing, dedicated account management, access to unpublished designs and samples, complimentary sampling for active projects, and direct access to our Jaipur design and production team for technical consultation. Contact us to register your studio.
Planet Arts accommodates single-piece custom commissions for residential and designer clients. For trade and wholesale customers, MOQs vary by construction type and design complexity. Hand knotted pieces are available as single commissions. Hand tufted and flatweave pieces produced in series may have a minimum of 2–5 pieces. For hospitality projects requiring consistent pattern runs, we structure orders for quality and cost efficiency. Contact our team for specific project guidance.
Sustainability is intrinsic to genuine handmade rug production: natural renewable fibres, skilled human labour (inherently lower carbon than mechanised production), and multi-generational product lifespan. Planet Arts uses OEKO-TEX compliant dyes and finishing agents, sources wool responsibly, pays fair artisan wages, and invests in continuous improvement of our environmental practices. Natural fibre and naturally-dyed rugs are available for clients with specific sustainability requirements. We provide material compliance documentation for green-building certified projects.
Yes — sampling is an integral part of the Planet Arts process. We offer material samples (yarn and fibre examples in specified colours), hand-knotted sample panels (typically 20×30cm, produced in the exact materials and knot density specified for your commission), and colour-way comparison samples for multi-option decisions. Physical sampling is strongly recommended as it provides an accurate sense of material quality, colour under different lighting, and pile character that digital imagery cannot convey. Contact our team to arrange samples for your project.
Regular vacuuming (without a beater bar) 2–3 times weekly in high-traffic areas; immediate blotting of spills with a clean white cloth (never rubbing); rotation every 6–12 months for even wear. Professional hand washing at a specialist facility every 3–5 years. Never use steam cleaning, harsh chemical treatments, or tumble drying on natural fibre handmade rugs. Place a quality natural rubber rug pad underneath to prevent slipping and protect the reverse of the pile.
Planet Arts produces three distinct collections: Aura — refined tonal elegance, gradational colour work, quiet luxury for the most elevated residential interiors. Magna — architectural scale, bold geometric presence, commanding authority for grand spaces and significant hospitality projects. Impact — the rug as art object; experimental, art-forward, and designed to create a genuine artistic statement. All collections are available in custom sizes, colours, and materials, and all are manufactured by hand in our Jaipur atelier.
Jaipur has been a centre of textile and rug artistry since the Mughal era, when artisans from Persia were invited to establish craft traditions in Rajasthan's royal courts. Over centuries, Jaipur developed its own distinctive character within the Indo-Persian carpet tradition — vibrant use of colour, innovative pattern interpretation, and a concentrated ecosystem of specialist craft knowledge. Today it is home to the world's highest density of skilled handmade rug artisans, master dyers, and specialist finishing craftspeople. Planet Arts, established in Jaipur in 2004, draws on this living tradition in every piece we produce.
Yes. Planet Arts produces rugs in any shape — circles, ovals, semicircles, hexagons, runners, organic profiles, and architecturally specific shapes that follow the footprint of a room, staircase, or furniture arrangement. Non-rectangular shapes are common in hospitality projects where rugs must conform to curved corridors, circular lobbies, or bespoke furniture configurations. All shaped pieces are produced with the same quality standards as rectangular formats.
Fine hand knotted rugs — particularly those of exceptional knot density, rare fibre combinations, or distinguished provenance — have a documented history of appreciating in value. The global market for antique and collectible handmade rugs is well-supported by major auction houses. Silk rugs and high-density wool-silk pieces are particularly regarded as objects of value beyond their decorative function. While Planet Arts is a manufacturer rather than investment advisors, many of our clients regard our finest pieces as both aesthetic and material investments.
Knot density — measured in knots per square inch (KPSI) — determines how much design detail a hand knotted rug can reproduce and is a primary indicator of quality and production time. 60–100 KPSI suits bold textural designs in thick wool. 100–200 KPSI covers most residential wool and wool-silk commissions with clean design reproduction. 200–300 KPSI allows fine detail and colour gradation in thin-spun wool and silk blends. 300–500+ KPSI is the realm of collector-grade silk rugs, enabling near-photographic design resolution. Planet Arts advises the appropriate knot density for each project based on design complexity and material.
